Riley Thom...(whistles) What great GB illustrations! Riley Thompson rocks indeed! I've heard his name many times (mostly as an animator), but I never knew he did Golden Books like this. Great designs & poses throughout! Thanks for enlightening, Will!

---------------------------------

Hey Pete E., what a coincidence. "The Little Whirlwind" happens to be MY favorite Mickey Mouse cartoon, too ("Symphony Hour" a close second)! Mickey's "perspective ears" kinda threw me off, but it definitely works & fits with that particular cartoon.

Did you know that "Whirlwind" was the LAST time Mickey is seen in his classic red buttoned shorts? He didn't wear those shorts again until "Runaway Brain", more than 50 years after this cartoon came out. (WARNING: NERD ALERT!!!)Michael J. He was also the main artist on the Brer Rabbit Sunday strip from 1951-54.Thadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04443425643665474645noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7128131605312127923.post-10205432790628114902007-08-04T19:09:00.000-07:002007-08-04T19:09:00.000-07:00thad, which comics did riley thomson draw? are the...thad, which comics did riley thomson draw? are they any good?

when i was tracking this book down i remembered the drawings had a distinctly fred moore/disney feel to them and wasn't too surprised to see a disney artist credited. it was published in 1951 near the end of disney's theatrical shorts run so either he had a little free time on his hands or was suddenly out of a job...

i like the three cartoons pete mentions too. some fine mickey animation in symphony hour, plus one of the final appearances of horace, (who looks nicely updated in the short).

more tomorrow jenny and joe. Will Finnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01297122976077620877noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7128131605312127923.post-59994265423599048662007-08-04T10:55:00.000-07:002007-08-04T10:55:00.000-07:00According to IMDB, Riley Thompson only directed 6 ...According to IMDB, Riley Thompson only directed 6 shorts for Disney, from 1940-1942. Considering that 4 of those shorts are my favourite Mickey cartoons, I'd have to dismiss whatever disparaging comments Ward may have made regarding his directing abilities. Though these particular shorts may indeed be slight in terms of plot, they are a visual delight for the character stylings and expressive animation. "The Little Whirlwind" will always be my favourite Mickey short for it's sheer visual appeal.

Thanks for posting these book illustrations, Will. It's nice to see what else Riley Thompson did, as I don't know much about him. Judging from these Woody illustrations, I'd say the guy had the same knack for appeal as Freddy Moore had.Pete Emsliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01451607722482352366noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7128131605312127923.post-10453820564055455002007-08-04T07:25:00.000-07:002007-08-04T07:25:00.000-07:00Thomson drew some good Disney comics too.
